The Hezekiah Chaffee House is a very old and special house in Windsor, Connecticut. It was built around 1765, which means it's over 250 years old! This house is one of the biggest and most detailed brick homes from that time in Windsor. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it's a museum run by the Windsor Historical Society, and you can visit it to learn about its past.
About the House
What the House Looks Like
The Hezekiah Chaffee House is a large, two-story building made of brick. It has a unique roof shape called a "gambrel roof" and a big chimney in the middle. The bricks are laid in a special pattern called "Flemish bond." The house sits on a strong foundation made of red sandstone.
There are also two smaller sections, or "ells," attached to the main house. These sections also have gambrel roofs and seem to have been built at the same time as the main part of the house. The front of the house has five windows across, with the main door in the center. Above the door, there's a special window with five small panes of glass. A fancy porch with columns and a pointed roof was added later.
A Look at Its History
The house was built around 1765 for Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee. He had bought the land about ten years earlier, in 1755. The Chaffee family lived in this house for a very long time, until 1926.
After the Chaffee family, the house was bought by a school. It was used as a girls' school called the Chaffee School. Later, this school joined with another school to become the Loomis Chaffee School. Today, the Hezekiah Chaffee House is a museum. The Windsor Historical Society takes care of it and offers tours. You can visit the museum from Wednesday to Saturday, between 11 AM and 4 PM.
