The Hezekiah Chaffee House is a special old house in Windsor, Connecticut. It was built around 1765. This house is one of the biggest and fanciest brick homes from that time in Windsor. Today, it is a historic house museum. It is looked after by the Windsor Historical Society. You can even take tours there all year! The house is also part of the Palisado Avenue Historic District.

About the Chaffee House

The Hezekiah Chaffee House is located in Windsor, Connecticut. It stands on the east side of the Palisado Green. This area was one of Windsor's very first settlements. It is just north of the Farmington River.

What Does It Look Like?

The house is a large, two-story building made of brick. It has a special type of roof called a gambrel roof. There is also a chimney in the center of the house. The bricks are laid in a pattern called Flemish bond. The house sits on a strong foundation made of red sandstone.

There are two smaller sections, or "ells," attached to the main house. They also have gambrel roofs. These sections are about one and a half stories tall. They extend out to the south and northeast. These parts seem to have been built at the same time as the main house. They share the same type of foundation.

The front of the house has five main sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. Above the door, there is a window with five small panes of glass. A fancy porch was added later. This porch has a triangular top and columns. These columns are in the Doric style, which comes from ancient Greece.

Who Lived Here?

The house was built around 1765 for Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee. He bought the land for the house in 1755. The Chaffee family lived in this house for a very long time. They owned it until 1926.

After the Chaffee family, the Loomis Institute bought the house. This was a school for boys at the time. They used the house for a girls' school. This school was known as the Chaffee School. Today, the Loomis Institute and the Chaffee School are together. They are now called the Loomis Chaffee School. They are located on a different campus.

Visiting the Museum

Now, the Hezekiah Chaffee House is a museum. The Windsor Historical Society runs it. It is open to visitors all year. You can visit the museum from Wednesday to Saturday. It is open from 11 AM to 4 PM. It is a great place to learn about history!
