Hiawatha Thompson Estes (born January 26, 1918, died May 8, 2003) was a famous American architect. He lived in California and was known for designing many different types of "ranch homes." These homes became very popular after World War II. Estes also sold his home plans to many people and wrote several books about house design.

Meet Hiawatha Estes

Hiawatha Estes was a member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. He was born in 1918. He grew up and later studied at the University of Oklahoma.

Serving His Country

During World War II, Estes joined the military. He served as a captain in the Army Air Corps. He was part of the 37th Fighter Squadron. His service helped protect the country during the war.

Designing Homes for America

After the war, Estes started his own business. It was called "Architectural House and Plan Business, Nationwide Plan Book." This company later became "Hiawatha Estes and Associates."

He lived in Northridge, California, which is a part of Los Angeles. This area has many different styles of ranch homes. Some of these homes were designed by Hiawatha Estes himself. He was very good at creating many unique versions of the popular ranch home style.

Estes was also related to Senator Helen TeAta Cole. She was his cousin and also from Oklahoma.
