Hiawatha Island is a special island found near Owego, New York. It sits right in the Susquehanna River. This island is quite large, covering about 112 acres. It makes up most of the Hiawatha Island Riverfront Park Complex.

In fact, Hiawatha Island is the biggest island on the Susquehanna River in all of New York State! It's a mix of different natural areas, including thick woods, open meadows, and grassy fields. The island is also part of a natural area that sometimes floods, which helps keep its environment healthy.

Island History

Hiawatha Island has a long and interesting past.

Early Days

People have known about and used Hiawatha Island for a very long time. Native American groups visited the island. However, there is no proof that anyone ever lived there all year round. It was likely a place for hunting, fishing, or gathering resources.

The Hotel Era

Later, in 1870, a hotel was built on the island. This hotel became a very popular spot for people traveling by riverboat. These boats carried passengers between the towns of Owego and Binghamton. Visitors enjoyed the island's beauty and the hotel's comforts.

The hotel stayed open for about 25 years. It closed its doors in 1895. After that, the island was owned by private individuals for many years.

Protecting the Island

By 1988, local citizens decided to take action. They wanted to protect Hiawatha Island for everyone to enjoy. These community members worked together to buy the island. Their goal was to turn it into a special place for wildlife and learning.

Today, the island is managed by the Waterman Center. It serves as a wildlife refuge, which means it's a safe home for animals and plants. It's also an educational center where people can learn about nature. Very few of the old buildings from the hotel days are still standing.

Historical Records

In 1994, the Owego Historical Society published a detailed description of Hiawatha Island. This book shares information about the island's history and the people connected to it. It helps us remember the island's past.
