What's in a Name?

Hickiwan has had many different names over time! Some of these names include Hikibon, Hikiro, Hikjorn, Hikuwan, Jiquibo, Kokuli, Milpitas, Perigua, Periqua, and Tachitoa. In 1941, the Board on Geographic Names officially decided that the name would be Hickiwan. This board helps make sure places have clear, official names.

Vaya Chin: A Special Place

Within Hickiwan, there's a place called Vaya Chin. In the 1930s, people also called it "South Well." The name "Vaya Chin" comes from the O'odham language, which is spoken by the Tohono O'odham people. In their language, vaya chin means "well's mouth."
