High Plains (Australia) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The High Plains are a special part of south-eastern Australia. They are a group of areas next to the Australian Alps, which are part of the huge Great Dividing Range. For a long time, since the 1830s, people used these plains for summer grazing their animals. Today, many parts of the High Plains are protected as national parks.

What Are the High Plains?

The High Plains region is like a big, flat area called a plateau. Over many years, wind and water have shaped it, creating deep valleys known as gorges. These natural features made the High Plains a perfect place for animals to graze.

Natural Pastures and Early Settlers

The higher parts of the plains had lots of natural grass. This was great for cattle. In the lower areas, early settlers cleared away native forests. Some of these settlers had special permits to graze their animals. Others were "squatters," meaning they settled without permission.

Cattle and the Seasons

During summer, cattle stayed on the high plains. They didn't try to wander into the thick forests or down the steep gorges. This meant farmers only needed fences for small areas like stockyards. However, it was very important to gather all the cattle in autumn. If the weather turned cold too early, or if it snowed, the cattle might get lost. They could even become feral, meaning they would live in the wild without human care.

History of the High Plains

Moving cattle to and from these summer pastures was a huge challenge. This practice is sometimes called yaylag pastoralism. It required amazing skill, especially with horses.

Tough Trails and Brave Drovers

In this part of Australia, the easiest paths usually followed the tops of ridges, not the valleys. Early explorers who tried to follow valleys often ran into steep cliffs. Getting cattle to climb narrow paths up to a ridge needed a lot of courage and skill from the drovers.

These ridge paths were also very difficult for most wheeled vehicles. Even slow bullock drays found them risky. So, people usually used pack horses to carry supplies and goods.

Stories from the High Plains

Many famous Australian stories and poems come from this rugged area. One of the most well-known is The Man from Snowy River by Banjo Paterson. This poem tells a thrilling tale of horsemanship and bravery in the High Plains.
