About High Shoals Falls
High Shoals Falls is a stunning waterfall found in the South Mountains of North Carolina. The water here comes from the Jacob's Fork River. The falls drop about 80 feet (24 meters) over a large rock area. After the main waterfall, the river continues to flow over many smaller waterfalls, called cascades. Over about a quarter of a mile, the river drops another 300 feet (100 meters)! This shows how steep and rugged the land is in this area.
Exploring South Mountains State Park
High Shoals Falls is located inside South Mountains State Park. This park is owned and managed by the State of North Carolina. The South Mountains are a wide area of peaks and hills that rise sharply from a deep valley. These mountains cover a huge area, about 100,000 acres (400 square kilometers). Rivers and streams, like the Jacob's Fork River, flow through the park. They cut deep into the land, creating steep and rugged slopes. The park was created in 1974 to protect this amazing natural area.
Visiting the Waterfall Safely
The waterfall is a main attraction at South Mountains State Park. There are many trails throughout the park for visitors to explore. The most popular trail to see the falls is called the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail.
It is very important for everyone to stay on the marked trails. Swimming is absolutely not allowed near the falls. The water can be very dangerous, especially near the top of the falls, and serious accidents have happened there. Always follow the park rules to stay safe and enjoy your visit!
