High Wood facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

High Wood (which the French call Bois des Fourcaux) is a small forest in northern France. It's located near a village called Bazentin le Petit, in a region known as the Somme département. This quiet forest became very famous during World War I because a huge battle, the Battle of the Somme, took place there. To the British soldiers who fought bravely in this area, it was simply known as High Wood.

High Wood: A Key Location in World War I

High Wood might look like any other forest today, but it holds a lot of history. During World War I, it was a very important place. Imagine a battle where soldiers needed to see far away to plan their next moves. High Wood was on high ground, which meant anyone controlling it could see for miles around. This made it a super important spot for both sides fighting in the war.

The Battle of the Somme at High Wood

The Battle of the Somme was one of the biggest and longest battles of World War I. It lasted for many months in 1916. High Wood was a small but very tough part of this huge battle. Soldiers from both the British and German armies fought fiercely to control it.

The fighting in High Wood was especially difficult. Forests are tricky places to fight because trees block your view, and it's easy to get lost. The ground was also full of tree roots and broken branches, making it hard to move. Soldiers had to be very brave and determined to fight in such conditions.

Why High Wood Was So Important

High Wood's location was its main strength. Being on a hill, it offered a great view of the surrounding area. This meant that whichever army held High Wood could watch the movements of the other side. It was like having a giant lookout tower in the middle of the battlefield.

Because of this, both the British and German armies knew how valuable High Wood was. They fought for control of it for several weeks in the summer of 1916. Many brave soldiers from both sides showed incredible courage during these battles.

High Wood Today

Today, High Wood is a peaceful place. It's a quiet forest where you can walk and reflect on the past. There are also cemeteries nearby, like the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) London Cemetery, where many soldiers who fought in the area are buried. These cemeteries are important places to remember the people who gave their lives during the war. A red poppy is often seen there, a symbol of remembrance.

High Wood stands as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made during World War I. It's a place where history comes alive, helping us understand the past and appreciate peace.
