Highgate is a small suburb located inside the city of Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Vincent area. Highgate is just north of Perth's main city centre.
This suburb got its name from a village called Highgate in Kent, England. Highgate is actually the smallest suburb in the whole Perth metropolitan region. It covers an area of only about 0.4 square kilometres.
What to See in Highgate
Highgate has some interesting old buildings and landmarks. One of these is the Lincoln Street Vent. This is a tall, decorative tower built in 1935. It was designed by Russell Dumas.
The vent was meant to be part of the sewerage system. However, it didn't work as planned and became a "white elephant" (something expensive but useless). During World War II, it was secretly used by the police as a base for their radio antenna.
Another old building is the Highgate Hill Police Station. This building is no longer used as a police station. It now houses the Police Museum, which is run by the WAPOL Historical Society.
Schools in Highgate
Highgate is home to two primary schools. A primary school teaches younger students.
- Sacred Heart is a Catholic primary school.
- Highgate Primary School is one of the oldest government primary schools in Western Australia.
Highgate Primary School is very diverse. It has students from over 50 different countries and backgrounds. The school is also known for its successful chess team and rock band. Students at Highgate Primary also learn the Indonesian language. They take part in local sports events too.
There was once another school called St Mark's International College. It was an English language school for students learning English. This school operated from 1989 to 2010. The buildings were originally built in 1936 for a Catholic boys' high school. This school was known as CBHS Highgate. Later, it merged with another school and changed its name to St Mark's College Highgate. The school closed, and the students moved to Chisholm College. The old St Mark's buildings were turned into apartments in 2013.
