How the City of Vincent Started
The City of Vincent gets its name from a street called Vincent Street. People believe the street was named by George Vincent around 1876. He was a main mapmaker for the government. George Vincent was also the first person to own land on the north side of this street.
Early Days: Leederville Roads Board
In May 1895, the areas of Leederville and West Leederville were growing. They became known as the Leederville Roads Board. A "Roads Board" was an early type of local government. It was mainly in charge of building and maintaining roads.
Becoming a Municipality
By 1895, the Leederville Roads Board changed. It became a "municipality." This meant it had more power to manage local services. In April 1897, the municipality was split into three parts: north, south, and central. At this time, more than 1,000 people lived in the area.
Joining with Perth
In 1914, there was a big idea called the "Greater Perth Movement." This movement wanted to combine smaller local areas into a larger Perth city. So, the municipalities of North Perth, Leederville, and Perth joined together. Victoria Park also joined in 1917.
Becoming the City of Vincent
On July 1, 1994, the City of Perth was reorganized. This created three new local governments. These were the Town of Vincent, the Town of Cambridge, and the Town of Victoria Park. The original City of Perth became smaller. Then, on July 1, 2011, the Town of Vincent became the City of Vincent. This happened when it was given "city status."
Plans for Change
In 2014, there was a plan to change the City of Vincent again. The idea was to split its land between the City of Perth and the City of Stirling. Another idea was for Vincent to join completely with Perth. But these plans did not work out. So, the City of Vincent's boundaries stayed the same.
