Mount Hawthorn is a suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Vincent area. It is known for its friendly community and interesting history.

History of Mount Hawthorn

Mount Hawthorn was first chosen for building homes and businesses in 1887. This was a time when Perth was growing quickly.

How Mount Hawthorn Got Its Name

In the late 1890s, a group of people bought some land here. This group included Edward Wittenoom, who was a politician (someone involved in government) and a pastoralist (someone who raises sheep or cattle). The group also included James Hicks and C. L. W. Clifton.

In 1903, this group decided to divide their land into smaller blocks to sell. James Hicks named his part of the land "Hawthorn Estate." He chose this name because he had recently visited Melbourne and stayed in a suburb there called Hawthorn. That's how Mount Hawthorn got its name!

  • There is a park named "Axford Park" in his honor. You can find it near where Scarborough Beach Road and Oxford Street meet.

Anzac Cottage: A Special Home

  • The cottage was built to provide a home for soldiers who returned from the war with injuries. It also honors those who died fighting.
  • The first person to live there was Private John Porter, a soldier wounded in the Gallipoli Campaign. He lived there with his wife.
