According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.9 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 0.66%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 986 people, 403 households, and 309 families residing in the city. The population density was 112.8 people per square mile (43.6/km²). There were 501 housing units at an average density of 57.3 per square mile (22.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.07% White, 0.41% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 403 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.78.
