History of Highwood
When Did Highwood Get Its Start?
Highwood first opened a post office in 1881. It closed and reopened a few times. Since 1886, the post office has been open all the time. The community got its name from a nearby stream called Highwood Creek.

The valley where Highwood is located became well-known in 1962. This was because of a movie called Shoot Out at Big Sag. The famous actor Walter Brennan starred in the film.
