History of Higuerote

Alonso de Ojeda
Alonso de Ojeda, an early explorer.

Explorers first saw the Higuerote area in 1499. This was during a trip by Alonso de Ojeda. The area was home to the Island Caribs, an indigenous group. People have talked about this place since 1515.

The town's name, Higuerote, has two possible origins. One idea is that it comes from an indigenous chief named Igoroto. He led the local tribes. Another idea is that it comes from the Latin word "La Higuera," which means fig tree. There is also a local tree called Higuerote. It is similar to a fig tree but smaller. People in America used its wood to build boats.

In the past, Higuerote was a stop for ships. Sometimes, people would secretly trade goods like cocoa from the Barlovento area here.

A writer named Bartolomé de las Casas wrote about an event in Higuerote. He said a Spanish adventurer tricked local people onto his ship. This made the town lose trust in visitors. It also made the area less safe for future travelers.

Higuerote became a permanent town in the mid-1800s. Since then, it has grown into an important coastal center.
