Hilda Sarah Bernard (born October 29, 1920 – died April 20, 2022) was a famous Argentine actress. She had a very long career, acting in many TV shows, movies, plays, and radio programs.

Her Amazing Life Story

Starting Out as an Actress

Hilda Bernard was born in Puerto Deseado, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Her father was English, and her mother was Austrian. Hilda had two siblings, Raquel and Jorge. Her brother Jorge played professional rugby.

After finishing high school, Hilda went to the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. But she soon left to study acting with famous Argentine teachers. These included actor Antonio Cunill Cabanellas and actress María Rosa Gallo.

In 1941, Hilda got her first acting job at the Cervantes National Theater. She appeared in the play Martín Fierro. In 1942, Hilda started working in radio. She joined the Radio El Mundo network. There, she acted in many radio shows with actors like Oscar Casco. Her voice became well-known from programs like No quiero vivir así.

Hilda first appeared in Argentine cinema (movies) in 1952. Her first film was Mala Gente. She also appeared early on Argentine television. She was in Esos que dicen amarse, which became very popular.

Becoming a Star

Hilda's big career in Argentine television really took off in the 1960s. She was in TV shows like Your Favorite Comedy (1965). She also worked with director Alberto Migré on shows like Women In Prison (1967) and Italian Girl Comes To Marry (1969).

She also became successful in theatre plays. One of her plays was Amanda Viale. Later, in 1976, she was in a TV version of Love Has A Female Face. From 1981 to 1985, she appeared with actress Amelia Bence in The 24 Hours. This was a very successful TV program.

In the theatre, she acted in plays like Cuarteto and The Last Encounter. She also appeared in 20 movies. Some of these were Vení conmigo (1973) and the comedy Autocine Mon amour (1972). She acted alongside other famous Argentine actresses like Chela Ruíz. In the 1980s, her TV roles included Ana in El camionero y la dama.

Later Years and Continued Success

In the early 1990s, Hilda Bernard started getting roles that fit her age. She appeared in many episodes of the TV series Celeste. She acted opposite Andrea del Boca in 172 episodes. After Celeste, she was in Cosecharás tu siembra (1991). She also played Madame Guerrero in Manuela, which was filmed in Italy.

Hilda also joined children's TV series. She was in Cris Morena's Chiquititas, which ran from 1995 to 2001. She also appeared in Damián Szifrón's The Simulators. Cris Morena later directed Hilda in Rebelde Way (2002–2003) and Floricienta (2004–2005). Millions of young people watched these shows. This made Hilda Bernard very popular with children. For Floricienta, she even won a Martín Fierro Award in 2003.

In 1999, she starred in Bien de amores. One of her last movie roles was with Norma Aleandro in Live-In Maid.

In 2005, when she was 84, Hilda appeared in the play When You Completely Die. She played an old hippie. That same year, she returned to TV in the soap opera Se dice de amor. Critics praised her performance. In 2007, she was in Fetiche, a play performed live at the Teatro Sarmiento. From 2004, she also appeared in the Argentine TV version of The Nanny, called La Niñera. She played the mother of the main character.

She also appeared in 12 episodes of The Successful Pells. She was nominated for a Martín Fierro Award for her role in Dromo. In 2010, Hilda received the María Guerrero Lifetime Achievement Award. On May 6, 2010, she performed at the historic Teatro Roma. She pretended to be tango singer Ada Falcón.

Her Life and Legacy

Hilda Bernard was married twice. Her first husband was producer Jorge Gonçalvez. Her second husband was Horacio Zelada. She had one daughter named Patricia. She also had three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In 2011, at 90 years old, Hilda was still working and staying active. She rode her bike three times a week and took regular walks. She also read novels and studied scripts for her acting roles. She once told a reporter, "I will live for many years."

In 2012, Bernard appeared on television again in the series Intertwined.

She recovered from a stroke in 2014. She also survived COVID-19 in 2020. Hilda Bernard passed away on April 20, 2022, at the amazing age of 101. She left behind a wonderful legacy of acting.
