Early Life and Education
Hilda Stevenson-Delhomme was born Marie Hilda Stevenson on March 8, 1912. She was the only daughter of Ti Jean Stevenson and Amelia Stevenson.
She went to school in Victoria, Seychelles, and also in Ayrshire, Scotland. After finishing her first degree at Skerry's College, she decided to study medicine. She became a qualified doctor after studying at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians.
Her Career as a Doctor and Politician
In 1939, Hilda Stevenson-Delhomme returned to the Seychelles. She worked as a doctor there. In 1944, she went back to Scotland to study more. During World War II, she helped in hospitals in Scotland.
Later, she returned to the Seychelles because her mother was not well. She continued to work as a private doctor.
In 1951, Hilda Stevenson-Delhomme was chosen to be a member of the Legislative Council. This was a big step for women in politics in the Seychelles.
In 1952, she helped start the Tuberculosis Funds Programme. This program helped people who were sick with tuberculosis after they left the hospital. She also became a medical officer for the Red Cross Society in the Seychelles in 1954.
In 1964, she started her own political party called "Parti Seselwa." Because of her work, she was appointed as a member of the National Assembly in 1967. This made her the first female parliamentarian in the Seychelles.
Her Death
Hilda Stevenson-Delhomme passed away on January 4, 2002, in France. She was 88 years old.
