Hildebrand is a small, unincorporated community in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's located along Bliss Road, not far from Oregon Route 140, northeast of Dairy.
The Old Railway Line
Hildebrand used to have a train station! It was part of the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway. This railway line connected Klamath Falls to Bly by 1929.
In 1941, a train schedule showed Hildebrand as the eighth stop east of Klamath Falls. It was located between the towns of Dairy and Horton.
From Railway to Trail
After 1990, the train tracks near Hildebrand were removed. The old railway line was then turned into a special path called a rail trail. This trail is known as the OC&E Woods Line State Trail. It's a great place for walking, biking, and enjoying nature. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department takes care of this trail.
The Story of the Post Office
A post office was first opened in Hildebrand in August 1890. The very first postmaster, who was in charge of the mail, was Newton F. Hildebrand.
Name Changes
The post office was originally named Edgewood. However, its name was quickly changed to Hildebrand in December 1890. For a few years, between 1919 and 1923, the post office's name was accidentally spelled Hilderbrand. But it soon went back to the correct spelling, Hildebrand. The post office in Hildebrand finally closed for good in 1942.
