Who Was Hilderic?
Hilderic was a Visigothic count. A count was like a powerful governor or a local ruler in a specific area. Hilderic's job was to manage the city of Nîmes and the land around it. This was during a time when the Visigoths ruled a large part of what is now Spain and parts of France.
Serving Two Kings
Hilderic lived during the 600s. He was a count first under King Recceswinth. After Recceswinth, King Wamba took the throne in the year 672. Hilderic continued his role as count under King Wamba.
Hilderic's Rebellion
Soon after King Wamba became king in 672, Hilderic decided to rebel. This means he went against the new king's rule. He wanted to challenge King Wamba's power.
Who Joined the Rebellion?
Many people who felt unfairly treated joined Hilderic's rebellion. This included many Jewish people who were facing difficulties at the time. They hoped that joining Hilderic would bring about a positive change for them.
King Wamba's Response
King Wamba did not ignore the rebellion. He sent one of his trusted leaders, a duke named Paul, to stop the fighting. Duke Paul was supposed to put an end to Hilderic's uprising.
Duke Paul's Surprise Move
However, something unexpected happened. When Duke Paul arrived in the region of Septimania, he decided to join the rebellion himself! Septimania was an important area that included lands known as Narbonensis and Tarraconensis. So, King Wamba now had two rebellions to deal with.
What Happened to Hilderic?
King Wamba eventually managed to stop both rebellions. He was very strong and crushed the groups that went against him. While King Wamba let Duke Paul live, Hilderic's exact fate is not known. History does not tell us what happened to him after the rebellion was put down.
