The Hillsdale Historic and Archeological District is a special area in Richmond, Rhode Island. It's like a historical treasure map! This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

It marks the spot where an old mill village called Hillsdale used to be. Today, you can still see clues about its past.

What Was Hillsdale?

Hillsdale was once a busy village located right by the Beaver River. Long ago, it was known by a different name: Moore's Mills.

Early Mills and Factories

Around 1800, the first building here was a grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. Imagine the sound of the millstones turning!

Later, in 1828, a wool-carding mill was built. Carding is a process that prepares wool fibers for spinning into yarn. This mill helped make wool ready for clothing.

Over time, this mill changed. It started making a type of tough cloth. This fabric was strong and durable, perfect for many uses.

The End of an Era

By the late 1800s, the factories in Hillsdale stopped working. The industrial activity that once made the village buzz came to an end.

In 1977, people explored the site. They found a few old houses still standing. They also saw the stone ruins of the old textile mill. A peaceful mill pond was also part of the scene. These ruins are like silent storytellers, showing us where the busy mills once stood.
