Hilton, Maryland facts for kids
Hilton is a small, undeveloped area in Howard County, Maryland, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a place where people live and work, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county government.
Discovering Hilton
Hilton is located where two old roads, Montgomery Road and Columbia Pike, meet. It's about a mile south of the historic town of Ellicott City. This crossroads made it a recognizable spot in the area for many years.
A Look Back: Hilton's History
In 1913, a man named James Booker Clark built a large, impressive house at a place called Elkridge Farm in Hilton. This mansion was designed to look a bit like the famous White House in Washington, D.C.! However, this grand home didn't last long. On July 2, 1920, a fire destroyed the mansion. At the time of the fire, there was also a problem with the water supply, as a water reservoir nearby had cracked.
Hilton Today
Today, the area where the beautiful mansion once stood is now home to a Target store, which is part of the Long Gate shopping center. This shopping center, along with a National Guard Armory (a place where military equipment is stored and soldiers train), makes up much of the eastern part of Hilton. Over time, the address for Hilton has become part of Ellicott City, so you might not see "Hilton" on maps or addresses anymore.
