Hinda Miller (born Hinda Schreiber in 1950) is an amazing American inventor, businesswoman, and politician. She was born in Canada and is best known for helping to create the "Jogbra," which was the very first sports bra! This invention changed how people exercised.
Hinda Miller also served as a state senator in Vermont from 2002 to 2013. In 2022, she was honored by being added to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Hinda Miller's Early Life and Education
Hinda Schreiber was born on April 18, 1950, in Montreal, Canada. She later married Dr. Joel Miller, a psychologist, and they have two children.
Hinda Miller studied costume design. She earned a degree from the Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1972. She then got another degree from New York University in 1976. After her studies, she taught costume design at the University of South Carolina. In 1977, her family moved to Burlington, Vermont.
Inventing the Sports Bra
Hinda Miller played a big part in developing the first sports bra. In 1977, she worked with Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith. They created the first bra designed for exercise, which they first called a "jockbra." It was later renamed the "Jogbra."
This invention was a huge step forward for women's athletic wear. In 1990, the company Playtex bought Jogbra from Lindahl and her partners. Because of their important invention, Hinda Miller, Lisa Lindahl, and Polly Smith were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2022.
Hinda Miller's Business Ventures
Hinda Miller was also a co-founder of the Jogbra company. She served as its president for many years, from 1984 to 1994. Later, she was the CEO and then the vice president of communications for the company. Jogbra is now owned by Sara Lee Corp..
Today, Hinda Miller owns and leads DeForest Concepts, a company that helps other businesses. She is also on the Board of Directors for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, a well-known coffee company.
Hinda Miller's Public Service
Hinda Miller has been very active in public life and community service. She has held several important roles:
- She was the former leader of the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce. This group helps businesses in the Lake Champlain area.
- She was a member of the Burlington Airport Commission. This group helps manage the local airport.
- She served as a trustee for Champlain College, which means she helped guide the college.
- She was involved with the New England Culinary Institute.
- She was a co-chair of the Council of Educational Governance.
- She was elected as a State Senator in Vermont in 2002. She was reelected in 2004 and 2006. As a senator, she worked on committees related to economic development, housing, and education.
