Hinterrhein (district) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hinterrhein is a district in the canton of Graubünden, which is like a state or region in Switzerland. It's a beautiful area with mountains and valleys.

This district is quite large, covering about 617.67 square kilometers (that's about 238.5 square miles). As of December 2004, around 12,508 people lived there.

What is Hinterrhein Like?

Hinterrhein is divided into five smaller areas called Kreise, which are like sub-districts. Within these sub-districts, there are 39 different municipalities, which are like towns or villages.

The Sub-districts

The five sub-districts in Hinterrhein are:

  • Avers
  • Domleschg
  • Rheinwald
  • Schams
  • Thusis

Each of these sub-districts has its own unique towns and villages, making Hinterrhein a diverse place.

Changes Over Time

Sometimes, smaller towns or villages decide to join together to form a larger municipality. This helps them work together more easily.

  • For example, on January 1, 2006, the town of Medels im Rheinwald became part of Splügen.
  • Also, on January 1, 2003, the towns of Donath and Patzen-Fardün joined to become part of Donat.

These changes help to organize the district and its communities.
