About Hiram Bond Everest

Early Life and Career

Hiram Bond Everest was born in Pike, New York, on April 11, 1830. When he was about 18 years old, he moved to Wisconsin. There, he worked as a science teacher. In 1853, he moved to Rochester, New York. In Rochester, he started his own grocery business.

He married Mercy Eleanor Everest on January 1, 1852. They had four children together.

Starting Vacuum Oil Company

Later, Hiram Everest teamed up with a business partner named Matthew Ewing. Together, they started the Vacuum Oil Company in 1866. They had a special patent for a new way to make kerosene. This new method involved distilling kerosene in a vacuum. A great side product of this process was a very high-quality lubricant.

The company originally planned to make kerosene. However, they soon found that their lubricants were much better than what other companies offered. This gave them a big advantage in the market.

Inventions and Success

Hiram Everest and the Vacuum Oil Company patented several important inventions. These inventions helped them create better products. Everest later leased a large area of land, about 10,000 acres, in Oatka Valley, New York. He became very successful and was known as a multi-millionaire.

Hiram Everest passed away at the age of 82 in Los Angeles, California.
