His Highness the Prince is a unique sculpture created by the famous artist Joan Miró in 1974. It is now a special part of the art collection at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, Spain.
About the Sculpture
His Highness the Prince is one of three important sculptures Miró made in 1974. The other two are Her Majesty the Queen and His Majesty the King. Miró was very famous around the world at this time. These three artworks were first shown in a big art show in Paris, France.
In the years before, Miró's art was also shown in major museums. His work was seen at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and the Hayward Gallery in London. The Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona was also being built during this time. It opened to the public in 1975.
Miró often made art that questioned power. He had created artworks about a character called Ubu Roi in 1966. The grand names of these sculptures, like His Highness the Prince, seem to be a bit of a joke. They contrast with the simple materials Miró used to make them. This shows that even important things can be made from everyday items.
Miró believed artists should use their voice to help people. He said that an artist should "say something... useful to service people."
What it Looks Like
His Highness the Prince is made from two large pieces of wood. They are put together and have a curved goat horn on top. Some parts of the sculpture still show the natural color of the wood. Other parts are painted with bright blue, red, or yellow colors.
There is a photo of this artwork at Son Boter, a place in Mallorca where Miró had a workshop. This suggests he might have made the sculpture there. He often used everyday items from farm life in his art.
Miró liked to find ordinary objects, especially from places like Montroig or Mallorca. He would then turn these simple items into amazing sculptures.
