Hisham Muhammad Zaki Barakat (Arabic: هشام محمد زكي بركات Hišām Muḥammad Zakī Barakāt; born November 21, 1950 – died June 29, 2015) was a top legal official in Egypt. He served as the Prosecutor General from 2013 to 2015. In this important role, he was in charge of many legal cases across the country. Sadly, he died in a car bombing in June 2015.

Early life and career

Hisham Barakat studied at Cairo University. He earned a degree in Law in 1973. After finishing his studies, he joined the Public Prosecution. This is a part of the legal system that handles criminal cases.

He worked in different courts, including those that hear cases for the first time. He also worked in courts that review decisions made by lower courts. Later, he became a senior official in the Cairo Appeals Court.

Becoming Prosecutor General

Hisham Barakat was chosen to be the Prosecutor General by Egypt's temporary President, Adly Mansour. This happened after the previous Prosecutor General, Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, stepped down. Barakat officially took his oath on July 10, 2013.

As Prosecutor General, he was responsible for leading all public prosecutors in Egypt. His job was to make sure that laws were followed and that justice was served. He oversaw many important legal investigations and cases during his time in office.

Assassination

On June 29, 2015, Hisham Barakat was killed in a car bombing. The attack happened as he was leaving his home in Heliopolis, a part of Cairo. A bomb was placed in a parked car and set off as his motorcade passed by.

The explosion happened around 10:00 a.m. Barakat was taken to the hospital right away. He passed away at 12:30 p.m. due to serious injuries. Several of his guards and drivers were also hurt in the attack.

People across Egypt were very sad and upset about his death. Many TV channels stopped their regular shows to mourn him. The Egyptian government began a full investigation into the bombing.

Later, a court in Cairo found many people responsible for the attack. In July 2017, the court sentenced 28 people to death for their part in Barakat's killing. Another 15 people received 25-year jail sentences.
