Historical United States Census totals for Aroostook County, Maine facts for kids
Aroostook County, Maine, is a large county in the northernmost part of the state. This article shares information about how many people lived in different towns and areas of Aroostook County, according to the U.S. Census from 1900 to 2000.
In Maine, there are two main types of official communities: towns and cities. The lists below will show you the population for both. Most places in New England are completely divided into towns or cities. However, in northern New England states like Maine, there are also areas that are not part of any town or city. These are called "unincorporated territories" and usually have very few people living there. Aroostook County has a lot of this unincorporated land, especially in its central and northern parts.
Some unincorporated areas in Maine are organized into a special type of community called a "plantation." These are considered "organized" but not fully "incorporated" like towns. Aroostook County also has a very small area that is part of an Indian reservation, which is a separate type of community. Because Aroostook County has so much unincorporated land, we'll look at its population numbers separately after the main tables. If you add up the populations of all towns, cities, plantations, and unorganized areas for any census year, you should get the total population for the county.
For more details on how towns and cities work in New England, you can check out the article on New England town.

Plantations in Aroostook County
In 1900, Aroostook County had 32 plantations. Today, only eleven of them are still plantations. Here's what happened to the others:
- 18 plantations from 1900 became towns during the 20th century. Ten of these became towns between 1900 and 1915, and eight more became towns between the 1960s and 1980s. One of these, Connor, later stopped being a town and became unorganized territory again.
- Sheridan Plantation became part of the town of Ashland in 1901.
- Silver Ridge Plantation gave up its organization in 1941 and became unorganized territory.
- E Plantation also gave up its organization in 1990 and became unorganized territory.
- Winterville Plantation briefly changed its name to Hill in 1903 but changed it back to Winterville in 1907.

Unorganized Territory in Aroostook County
Aroostook County has a lot of unorganized territory, more than any other county in Maine. These areas are mostly in the western part of the county, which is often mountainous and remote. Historically, only about 40% of the county's land was organized into towns or plantations. The rest was unorganized.
Over time, some communities in Maine, including some in Aroostook County, stopped being organized and became unorganized territory again. For example, the town of Benedicta in 1987 and E Plantation in 1990.
Today, the unorganized areas in Aroostook County cover about 4,000 square miles. This is almost 60% of the county's land area, but only about 2.2% of its population lives there.
The U.S. Census Bureau has changed how it counts people in unorganized territories over the years. Since 1970, they've grouped nearby unorganized areas into larger "unorganized territories." As of the 2000 Census, there were five such areas in Aroostook County:
- South Aroostook Unorganized Territory: This area is in the southeastern part of the county. It includes the former town of Benedicta and the former Silver Ridge Plantation.
- Central Aroostook Unorganized Territory: This area is in the east-central part of the county and includes the former E Plantation.
- Square Lake Unorganized Territory: This area is in the northeastern part of the county.
- Northwest Aroostook Unorganized Territory: This is the largest unorganized area, covering most of the western part of the county. It includes about two-thirds of all unorganized territory in the county. Most of this area has very few people.
- Connor Unorganized Territory: This is the former town of Connor, which became its own unorganized territory because it's not connected to other unorganized land.
Here are the population figures for all unincorporated territory (including plantations) and then just the unorganized territory, with any details available:

Indian Reservations
Maine has three federally recognized Indian reservations. One of them, the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation, has a very small part that extends into Aroostook County. In Maine, Indian reservations are treated as separate areas, not part of any town or unorganized territory.
The main part of the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation is near the Penobscot River in Penobscot County. The reservation also controls parts of the Penobscot River channel. A tiny piece of this river channel, less than a quarter of a square mile, is in Aroostook County. This small part of the reservation is entirely water and had no population reported in the 2000 Census.
Notes on Census Totals
Sometimes, the Census Bureau makes small changes to population numbers after they are first released. This can sometimes mean that the numbers for individual towns might not perfectly add up to the county total in older census reports.
For example, in the 1960 Census, the total for Aroostook County was first reported as 106,064. The population for the town of Stockholm was later changed, but the county total wasn't updated to match. So, if you add up the town populations for 1960, they won't exactly equal the county total listed. Similar small revisions happened for the 1970 and 1980 census totals for Aroostook County and some towns.
