Mongolia became independent on December 29, 1911. This meant it was no longer part of the Qing Dynasty.
Becoming the Mongolian People's Republic
In 1924, after their king passed away, Mongolia changed its government. It became the Mongolian People's Republic. The capital city's name also changed from Küriye to Ulan Bator. This new republic was led by the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party. It had a very close friendship with the Soviet Union. The country followed a system called socialism.
The Republic of China had a special agreement with the Soviet Union. However, the Soviet Union was later criticized for helping the People's Republic of China. This happened during the Chinese Civil War. The Republic of China stated that it would not give up Mongolia as part of China.
Modern Mongolia Emerges
In February 1992, Mongolia decided to stop being a socialist country. The name of the country was also shortened to simply "Mongolia".
