The Hogup Mountains are a small mountain range in Box Elder County, Utah, United States. They stretch about 25 miles (40 km) long. These mountains are located near the northwest edge of the famous Great Salt Lake. They are also surrounded by the vast Great Salt Lake Desert.
In the middle of the range, you'll find three important peaks. These are Tangent Peak, Scorpio Peak, and Shelter Mountain. There's also a smaller peak called Dolphin Island. It is about 3 miles east, out in the Great Salt Lake.
What are the Hogup Mountains Like?
The Hogup Mountains have a main section where their three biggest peaks are found. The mountain range gets narrower as you go north or south. It eventually fades into the Great Salt Lake Desert.
There's also a smaller ridge to the northeast. This ridge is about 7 miles long. It runs in a direction from north-northwest to south-southeast.
Meet the Main Peaks
The Hogup Mountains have several notable peaks. Each one adds to the unique shape of the range.
- Broom Mountain: This peak is 4,782 feet (1,457 meters) tall. It marks the southern part of the mountain range.
- Scorpio Peak: Located in the southeast, Scorpio Peak reaches 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) high.
- Shelter Mountain: Just west of Scorpio Peak, Shelter Mountain stands at 5,964 feet (1,818 meters).
- Tangent Peak: This is the highest point in the range. Tangent Peak is 7,047 feet (2,148 meters) tall. You can find it in the center-north part of the mountains.
How to Visit the Hogup Mountains
You can reach the Hogup Mountains from different directions. The south side of the mountains is about 14 miles (23 km) east-southeast of Lakeside.
To get to the north side of the range, you can come from Kelton. Another way is through Park Valley. This town is located on Utah State Route 30.
