The Hogwort (scientific name: Croton capitatus) is a type of plant also known as woolly croton or goatweed. It's an annual plant, which means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces seeds, and then dies all within one year.

This plant has straight stems that branch out. These stems are covered in soft, light brown, woolly hairs, making the plant look whitish. Hogwort likes to grow in dry, open areas. You can often find it in sandy or rocky soils. It is commonly found across the southern United States.

Hogwort and Harry Potter

You might have heard of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter books! The author, J. K. Rowling, didn't actually name Hogwarts after the hogwort plant on purpose.

She only realized the connection after her books were published. A friend reminded her that they had seen the hogwort plant many years before at the Kew Gardens in London. Rowling then thought that the name of the plant must have stayed in her memory without her knowing it, and later inspired the name of her famous wizarding school.Template:KIDDLE XL START
