Holabird is a small, unincorporated community located in Hyde County, South Dakota, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government. Instead, it is usually managed by the county it is in.
The Story of Holabird
Holabird got its name from the maiden name of a railroad official's wife. Her father was William S. Holabird, who served as a lieutenant governor in Connecticut. A lieutenant governor is a state official, similar to a vice president for a state.
How Holabird Began
The community started to grow when the railroad tracks were built through this area. The arrival of the railroad often brought new people and businesses to a place. This helped Holabird become a small settlement.
Mail Services in Holabird
A post office was first opened in Holabird in 1884. This allowed residents to send and receive mail directly in their community. However, the Holabird post office is no longer open today. Mail services for Holabird are now handled by the post office in a nearby town, Highmore.
