The Holborn Division was an old way of dividing up land in Middlesex, England. It was one of four main parts of a larger area called a Hundred. Think of a Hundred as a very old type of district. The Holborn Division existed from the 17th century until 1900.

This area was located just north of Westminster, which is a famous part of London. When the County of London was created in 1889, the Holborn Division became part of it. Later, in 1900, it helped form the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn. Today, the land that was once the Holborn Division is covered by parts of the London Borough of Camden and the northern section of the City of Westminster.

What Was a Hundred?

A Hundred was a very old way to divide land in England. It was used for things like collecting taxes and for local meetings. The Holborn Division was part of the Ossulstone Hundred. This was a large area in the county of Middlesex.

The Ossulstone Hundred had four main divisions:

What Areas Were in Holborn Division?

In 1829, the Holborn Division included several smaller areas. These were often called "parishes," "townships," or "liberties." They were like small towns or neighborhoods within the larger division.

Here are some of the places that made up the Holborn Division:

  • The combined areas of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury.
  • The combined areas of St Andrew Holborn Above the Bars with St George the Martyr.
  • The liberty of Saffron Hill, Hatton Garden, Ely Rents and Ely Place. A "liberty" was a special area with its own rules.
  • The liberty of the Rolls.
  • The parish of St Pancras.
  • The parish of St John, Hampstead.
  • The parish of St Marylebone.
  • The parish of Paddington.
  • The precinct of the Savoy. A "precinct" was another type of defined area.

How Did Holborn Division Change?

Over time, the way areas were governed in England changed a lot. The old "divisions" and "hundreds" were replaced by newer systems.

  • In 1889, the Holborn Division became part of the new County of London. This was a big step towards modern London.
  • In 1900, the name "Holborn" continued in the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn. This was a new type of local government area.
  • Today, the land that was once the Holborn Division is part of the London Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster. These are modern local government areas that help manage services for people living there.
