Holburn West Church was a special church in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was part of the Church of Scotland. In June 2023, Holburn West Church joined with three other churches: Midstocket Church, Queen's Cross Church, and Rubislaw Church. Together, they formed a new church called Fountainhall Church.
About the Church Building
The church building is in the west part of Aberdeen, Scotland. You can find it where Ashley Park Drive meets Great Western Road. People started worshipping in this church building in October 1894.
Special Features of the Building
The church has some interesting historical features:
- Bell and Clock: A bell and a clock were added in 1895. They were made by a company called Gillet & Johnston.
- Sanctuary and Entrance: The main worship area, called the sanctuary, and the church entrance were updated in 2004.
- Organ: The church organ was built in 1922 by Abbott and Smith. It was repaired and updated in 1974 by N.P. Mander.
- Art on Walls: In 1905, during a redecoration, special paintings called "frescoes" were added. You can still see them today!
- On the back wall, there are paintings of a dove (representing the Holy Spirit) and a burning bush.
- On the front wall (near the pulpit), there are pictures of Jesus washing his disciples' feet and Jesus with children.
- Memorial Window: A beautiful stained-glass window was added in 1924.
- The middle part shows the Crucifixion (Jesus on the cross).
- The left side shows the Adoration of the Magi (wise men visiting baby Jesus).
- The right side shows Jesus preaching from a boat.
- Furniture: The communion table and chairs were dedicated in 1925. The font, used for baptisms, was dedicated in 1932.
History of the Church
Holburn West Church has a long history with different names and changes over the years:
- 1837: The church started as a Parish Church.
- 1843: It became known as Free Holburn Church.
- 1893: The first stone was laid for the building you see today.
- 1901: The church changed its name to Holburn United Free Church.
- 1929: It became Holburn West Church.
- 1963: A large hall was added to the building.
- 2004: The main worship area (sanctuary) was updated.
- 2023: Holburn West Church united with other churches to form Fountainhall Church.
