Holled Wallace Henry Coxe (born October 16, 1820 – died January 24, 1898) was a British soldier and leader in British India. He was known for his long career in the army.

Life and Military Career

Early Life and Education

Henry Coxe was born in Bangalore, a city in India. At that time, Bangalore was part of the Madras Presidency, a region controlled by the British. His father worked as a chaplain for the East India Company, a very powerful British trading company. Sadly, Henry's father passed away before Henry was born. Later, Henry went to study at Worcester College, Oxford University in England, starting in May 1839. His uncle, Henry Octavius Coxe, was also a notable person.

Joining the Army

In June 1841, Henry joined the Bengal Army. This was a part of the British Indian Army. His first military action was in the Gwalior campaign in 1843. He was also present at a big fight called the Battle of Maharajpore. He slowly moved up the ranks. In April 1850, he became a Lieutenant. By June 1856, he was promoted to Captain.

Key Military Actions

As a Captain, Henry Coxe was part of a special military group in 1860. This group was led by Neville Bowles Chamberlain. They went on an expedition against the Mahsood Wuzleerees people. Henry was involved in battles at places called Paloseen and Bunrah. For his actions in these battles, he received a medal. He continued to rise in the army. In June 1861, he became a Major. Then, in June 1867, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

Retirement and Later Life

Henry Coxe retired from the army in 1874. The next year, in January, he was officially given the rank of Major General. He passed away on January 24, 1898, in Leatherhead, England. He was 77 years old. He was buried at the Church of St Mary & St Nicholas, Leatherhead.
