Meet Bernard Hollencamp
Bernard Hollencamp was born in Germany. He moved to Xenia and started his own business. He opened the Hollencamp Brewery on Second Street, just east of downtown Xenia.
Later, the brewery building was used for different things. It became a creamery (where milk products are made). It also served as an ice house and a bottling company.
Building the Hollencamp House
Bernard Hollencamp had this house built in 1871. It stands right next to where his brewery used to be. A talented architect named Samuel Patterson designed the house.
Samuel Patterson also designed the Samuel N. Patterson House in Xenia. The Hollencamp House is a brick building made in the Italianate style. It has a strong stone foundation and an asphalt roof.
House Features
The house has two stories and is built with painted bricks. It has an interesting, uneven shape. Inside, there are thirteen rooms, which include six fireplaces with wooden mantels. There are also four bathrooms.
Most parts of the house look very much like they did when it was first built. This means it has kept its original charm over the years.
A Recognized Historic Home
In 1980, the Hollencamp House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. It earned this spot because of its beautiful and important architecture.
It was also listed because it was the home of a very important person in the local community. The Hollencamp House is the only building on East Second Street listed on its own.
Nearby Historic Area
However, it is very close to another important area. This area is called the East Second Street Historic District. Both the house and the district are important because they show what a street looked like in the 1800s.
They are also great examples of homes for wealthy people from that time. During the late 1800s, Victorian styles were very popular for homes.
