Holly is a small, unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In the year 2000, about 112 people lived in Holly.

History of Holly

Early Days and Growth

In the late 1800s, Holly was a busy place. It had three churches, a steam-powered saw, and a gristmill. A gristmill is a place where grain is ground into flour.

From 1886 to 1914, T. H. Phipps was the postmaster for the Holly post office. This means he was in charge of the mail.

Population Changes

In 1890, about 250 people lived in Holly. But by 1892, the number of residents had dropped to 100. Even with fewer people, Holly still had two general stores, a saw and grist mill, and a doctor. There was also a cooperative association, which is like a group working together for a common goal.

By 1896, the population had fallen even more, to just 50 people. At this time, there were no longer any businesses in Holly.

Later Years

In 1914, Holly had a population of 25. It still had one general store and a mill that processed cotton and grain.

The latest information available from 1948 showed that Holly still had 25 residents. There were several homes spread out, one shop, and a church. By 1963, the community still had a church and scattered homes.

The area where Holly was located could still be seen on the county highway map in 1989. In 2000, the population was 112 people.
