Holly Beach City, New Jersey facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Holly Beach City was a small town, also known as a "borough," that existed in Cape May County, New Jersey, in the United States. It was a separate town from 1885 until 1912.

The Story of Holly Beach City

The town of Holly Beach first became an official borough on April 14, 1885. This happened because the New Jersey Legislature (which is like the state's law-making group) passed a special law. Before that, people in the area voted on March 31, 1885, to decide if they wanted to become a borough. This vote is called a referendum. The land for the new borough came from parts of Lower Township.

A few years later, on April 1, 1890, the borough was officially re-established. This was also based on another vote held the day before.

Then, on May 4, 1897, the borough changed its name and was re-established again as Holly Beach City.

Finally, on January 1, 1912, Holly Beach City became part of a new, bigger town called Wildwood, New Jersey. At that point, Holly Beach City stopped being its own separate borough.
