Holly Marie Combs Ryan (born December 3, 1973) is an American actress and producer. She is well-known for her roles in popular TV shows. These include Kimberly Brock in Picket Fences, Piper Halliwell in Charmed, and Ella Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars.

Early Life of Holly Marie Combs

Holly Marie Combs was born in San Diego, California. Her family has Irish roots. When she was born, her mother was 15 and her father was 17. Her parents married but separated after two years. They felt they were too young to make their marriage work.

As a baby, Holly fell and hit her head. This caused a small mark above her right eyebrow. She moved around a lot with her mother near the beach in San Diego. Her mother was trying to become an actress. When Holly was seven, they moved to New York City. She spent most of her childhood there.

Holly was 12 when her mother married her stepfather. In New York City, she went to Beekman Hill Elementary. Later, she attended the Professional Children's School. Holly once shared that she became a certified scuba diver when she was 13 years old.

Starting Out: Early Roles (1988–1997)

When Holly was 14, she got her first big acting job. It was in the movie Sweet Hearts Dance (1988). She played Debs Boon, the daughter of characters played by Don Johnson and Susan Sarandon. Her next important role was in Oliver Stone's movie Born on the Fourth of July (1989). She played Jenny in this film, which also starred Tom Cruise.

Holly also appeared in other movies. These included New York Stories (1989) and Simple Men (1992). In 1992, she was in Chain of Desire and the scary movie Dr. Giggles. In Dr. Giggles, she played Jennifer Campbell, a 19-year-old character.

Breakthrough on Picket Fences

Holly's big break came when she was 18. She joined the CBS TV series Picket Fences. She played Kimberly Brock, the daughter of Sheriff Jimmy Brock. She was on the show for all four seasons, from 1992 to 1996. Her character's stepmother was Dr. Jill Brock.

Holly auditioned for the role in New York. The casting agent told her she wasn't right for the part. They said she "didn't have a big enough heart." Holly bravely replied, "If you're looking for someone with a big heart, what the hell are you doing in New York?". She was called back later and got the job. Holly won a Young Artist Award for her acting in Picket Fences.

After Picket Fences, Holly starred in the TV movie Sins of Silence (1996). The next year, she played real-life person Diane Zamora in the TV movie Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder. She also appeared in Daughters as Alex Morell.

Becoming a Witch: Charmed (1998–2006)

In 1998, Holly got a main role in The WB TV series Charmed. She played Piper Halliwell, one of three sisters who are powerful witches. After Shannen Doherty left the show, Holly's character, Piper, became the oldest sister. This happened from season three onwards.

Holly also became a producer for Charmed starting from season five. The show ran for eight seasons and ended in 2006. Her character, Piper, was named one of the greatest witches in TV history by AOL in 2007 and 2008. Holly was the only actor to appear in every single episode of Charmed.

Recent Work: Pretty Little Liars and More

While working on Charmed, Holly had a small role in the movie Ocean's Eleven (2001). She also starred in the romantic comedy See Jane Date (2003). In 2007, she was in the TV movie Point of Entry (also called Panic Button). She played Kathy Alden, a wife and mother who moves her family to a safe community after a break-in.

In 2010, Holly was cast in the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars. She played Ella Montgomery, the mother of one of the main characters, Aria Montgomery. Holly was a regular cast member for the first three seasons. She then appeared as a special guest star for the rest of the show. Pretty Little Liars ended in 2017, and Holly returned for the final episode.

In 2015, Holly and her former Charmed co-star Shannen Doherty had their own reality show. It was called Off the Map with Shannen & Holly. The show followed them as they traveled across the southeastern United States. In 2016, Holly starred in the Hallmark Channel TV movie Love's Complicated. She played Leah Townsend, a writer from a big city.

Holly Marie Combs' Personal Life

In 1993, Holly married actor Bryan Travis Smith. They divorced in 1997.

On Valentine's Day in 2004, she married David Donoho. He used to work on the set of Charmed. They have three sons together. In 2011, they divorced.

In 2016, Holly started dating Mike Ryan, who owns restaurants. They got engaged in 2017. In September 2019, they were reported to have married in Carmel, California. Through this marriage, Holly also has a stepdaughter.
