The hollyleaf redberry (scientific name: Rhamnus ilicifolia) is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the buckthorn family. This plant is found naturally in western North America. You can see it growing in many different places. These include chaparral areas and forests. Its home range stretches from Oregon through California, all the way to Baja California in Mexico and Arizona.

What the Hollyleaf Redberry Looks Like

The hollyleaf redberry is a large, spreading shrub. It can grow up to four meters (about 13 feet) tall. Its leaves are thick and shaped like an oval or circle. They are usually 2 to 4 centimeters long. The edges of the leaves have spiny teeth. These edges also curve inwards, making the leaves look like a shallow bowl.

The plant's flowers grow either alone or in small clusters. These clusters are called umbels and can have up to six flowers. Each flower has four pointed parts called sepals. Interestingly, these flowers do not have any petals.

The fruit of the hollyleaf redberry is a type of drupe. It turns a bright, shiny red when it is ripe. Each fruit is a little less than a centimeter wide. Inside, you will find two seeds.
