History of Hollywood, Alabama
The town of Hollywood started out with a different name. It was first called Samples on December 14, 1883. A few years later, on May 13, 1887, its name was changed to Hollywood. The town officially became an incorporated town on May 24, 1897. Its first election for town leaders happened shortly after, on June 8 of that same year.
In 1994, Hollywood, Alabama, along with ten other towns named Hollywood, had to stand up for their name. Hollywood, California tried to claim its name as a special brand. This would have forced other towns named Hollywood to pay money to use the name. However, Hollywood, Alabama, was the first town named Hollywood to officially become a town in the United States. It incorporated in 1897, which was six years before Hollywood, California, did in 1903. Also, Hollywood, California, later joined with Los Angeles in 1910, so it was no longer a separate city. This history helped Hollywood, Alabama, win the fight to keep its name freely.
A notable event in the town's history was a large sinkhole that appeared in 1892. This natural event was significant for the community.
