History of Holmen
Holmen was first settled in 1862 by people who had moved from Norway. It officially became a city on May 7, 1946.
Before it was called Holmen, the community was known as Frederickstown. This name honored Frederick Anderson, who was a blacksmith in the area. The name changed in September 1875 when Charles A. Sjölander opened the local post office. The word "Holmen" comes from the Norwegian word for "islet," which means a small island.
Geography and Landscape
Holmen is located in an area known for its beautiful natural features. You'll find lots of wooded areas, rolling hills, and tall bluffs. Bluffs are steep cliffs or hills, and these are common in this part of Wisconsin, often called the "Driftless Area." This region wasn't flattened by glaciers long ago, so it has unique landscapes.
The mighty Mississippi River flows just southwest of the city. Holmen covers about 7.26 square miles (18.81 square kilometers) of land. One special landmark is Star Hill, a tall bluff right next to downtown Holmen. It's named for a star that lights up on top of the hill.
