Holmes County State Park is a fun state park in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It's located about 4 miles south of Durant, right off U.S. Route 51. The park is home to two beautiful lakes: English Lake, which is 45 acres, and the smaller Odum Lake, at 14 acres. These lakes are great for fishing and enjoying nature.
Park History: Built by the CCC
Holmes County State Park started being built in 1935. It was created by a group called the CCC. The CCC was a special program during the 1930s. It helped many people find jobs during a tough time called the Great Depression. The CCC built Mississippi's first nine state parks, including this one.
The buildings in the park have a special "rustic style" architecture. This means they were designed to look like they belong in nature. They used natural materials and simple designs. Building these parks was a great example of how the state and federal governments worked together. Their goal was to help reduce the number of people who didn't have jobs.
Fun Things to Do at the Park
Holmes County State Park offers many activities for visitors. You can find 28 campsites built right around the two fishing lakes. This makes it easy to enjoy fishing whenever you want.
The park also has a nice picnic area. There are shelters where you can eat and relax, even if it rains. If you have a boat, there's a boat launch available. This lets you get out on English Lake or Odum Lake for fishing or just cruising around.
