Holmes Lake is a beautiful lake located in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is an important part of the natural landscape in this area.

About Holmes Lake

Holmes Lake is one of several large lakes. These lakes form the very beginning, or "headwaters," of the Little Southwest Miramichi River. The lake got its name in 1884. It was named after the first lumberman who worked in that specific area.

The Pratt Family and the Lake

For a long time, Holmes Lake was a special fishing spot. It was used only by the Pratt family from New York. A guide named Henry A. Braithwaite first showed the area to George Dupont Pratt. Mr. Pratt then built log cabins at the lake in 1909. These cabins became known as the Pratt Camps.

Later, the camps were passed down to George's son, Sherman Pratt. Sherman Pratt was famous for helping to start Marineland of Florida, a large marine park.

Summer Camp at Holmes Lake

The Pratt family had special permission to fish in Holmes Lake. They leased, or rented, the fishing rights from the government of New Brunswick. Sherman Pratt also founded a group called the Grenville Baker Boys Club. This club was located in Locust Valley, New York.

Sherman Pratt allowed the boys from this club to use the Pratt Camp. It became a summer camp for them. About thirty boys came to the camp each summer. They enjoyed the outdoors and the lake.
