The Holy Family is a famous painting created by the artist El Greco. He painted it between 1586 and 1588. This artwork is an oil painting on canvas. El Greco made it while he was living in Toledo. Today, you can see this painting in the Museum of Santa Cruz in Toledo.
Understanding El Greco's Holy Family
El Greco often painted scenes of the Holy Family. This means he liked to show Jesus, Mary, and Joseph together. In this specific painting, he shows the Christ Child sitting on Mary's lap. It's a peaceful and loving scene.
Who's in the Painting?
On the left side of the painting, you can see St Anne. She is Mary's mother, which makes her Jesus's grandmother. On the right side, you'll find Saint Joseph. He was Mary's husband and Jesus's earthly father. Also on the right is the young John the Baptist. He is shown as a child, looking at Jesus.
El Greco made other versions of the Holy Family too. For example, he painted a similar one around the 1590s. That later painting has a similar setup but does not include John the Baptist. It also shows Joseph and Anne in slightly different poses.
