Holy Rosary Catholic Church is an old and important Catholic church. It is located in the Little Italy area of Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. This church was started in the early 1890s. The beautiful building you see today was finished around 1910. It is now known as a historic site, which means it's a special place from the past.

The Church's Story

How Holy Rosary Church Began

In the early 1890s, many Italian families moved to Cleveland. They settled along Mayfield Road. Priests from nearby East Cleveland started helping these new immigrants. Their efforts were successful. The Diocese of Cleveland officially created Holy Rosary parish in 1892. The first church building was built by the end of that year.

Growing and Building

Even though the community had strong Italian roots, they also started to become part of American life. The church offered religious classes for children as early as 1896. At one time, Holy Rosary was one of about fifty "national parishes" in Cleveland. These parishes were for specific groups of immigrants. Holy Rosary was the first Italian parish in the city. The church members decided to build the current, larger building in 1905. It took four years to finish before it was officially opened.

What the Church Looks Like

Building Materials and Style

Many of the first members of Holy Rosary Church were stone cutters. However, the church itself is made of brick. The bottom part, called the foundation, is made of stone. Copper and stone are also used for special details on the outside. The church is built in a style called Baroque Revival. This style is known for being grand and decorative.

Outside Features

At the front of the church, there are stairs leading up to the main double doors. Above these doors, you can see two large arched windows. On the sides of the front, there are big arched areas mostly made of brick. These areas have small arched windows and round windows called oculi. Near the top of the front, there are two decorative lines, called belt courses. Many statues stand on top of the front of the church. The eastern side of the building has a dome-shaped tower called a cupola.

A Special Historic Place

National Register of Historic Places

In 1976, Holy Rosary Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical building. It earned this honor because of its beautiful architecture and its important role in the community's history.
