History of Holyrood
Holyrood was started in 1874 and became an official city in 1886. The first Holyrood was actually half a mile south of where it is today. Early settlers often lived in "dugout houses," which were homes built into the ground.
Early Settlers and Name Origin
The first people to settle in Holyrood were from Ireland. Soon after, families from Germany and the Czech Republic also moved to the area. Some of the first family names recorded were Phelan, Corrigan, Schepmann, and Siemsen.
The first post office opened in June 1874, but it was spelled "Hollyrood." The name changed to Holyrood in 1898. The first postmaster, John Corrigan, was from Holyrood, Ontario, Canada. The name "Holyrood" originally comes from Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, Scotland. So, the town's name connects directly to Scotland through Canada!
