Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Homâyun Serâji (Persian: همایون سراجی) was a brilliant scientist and engineer from Iran. He was born in 1947 and passed away on April 16, 2007. Dr. Seraji worked as a senior researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He was also a professor at Sharif University of Technology. He made important discoveries in the field of control systems. This includes how to control robots and help with space exploration.

Early Life and Education

Homâyun Serâji was born and grew up in Tehran, Iran. He was a very smart student. In 1965, he was the top student in Iran's national high school exams. After high school, he moved to the United Kingdom. He studied Electrical Engineering at Sussex University. Later, in 1972, he earned his Ph.D. in Control Systems. He received this advanced degree from the famous University of Cambridge.

His Career and Discoveries

In 1974, Dr. Seraji returned to Iran. He became a professor of Electrical Engineering. He taught and did research at Aryamehr University of Technology. This university is now known as Sharif University of Technology. He worked there for ten years. In 1984, the United Nations recognized him. They named him a United Nations Distinguished Scientist.

Working at NASA's JPL

In 1985, Dr. Seraji joined NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL is a leading center for robotic space exploration. It is part of the Caltech. At JPL, he did a lot of research. His work greatly improved how robots are controlled.

His research focused on several key areas:

  • Adaptive robot control: This helps robots learn and adjust their movements.
  • Control of dexterous robots: This is about making robots move with great skill.
  • Contact control: This helps robots interact with objects safely.
  • Real-time collision avoidance: This allows robots to avoid bumping into things.
  • Rule-based robot navigation: This helps robots find their way around.
  • Safe spacecraft landing: His work also helped spacecraft land safely.

Dr. Seraji published many papers about his research. He wrote 98 articles for scientific journals. He also presented 119 papers at conferences. His work led to 10 patents. A patent protects new inventions. In 2003, he was honored. He was named the most-published author. This was for the 20-year history of the Journal of Robotic Systems.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Homâyun Serâji received many awards for his important work:

  • 2003: JPL Edward Stone Award for Outstanding Research Publication.
  • 1991 and 2002: NASA Group Achievement Award.
  • 1997: Fellow of IEEE. This is a high honor from a major engineering organization.
  • 1992: NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Award.
  • Major Space Act Award: This is another important award from NASA.
