Discovering Homberg, Illinois
Homberg is found in the southern part of Illinois. It's in Pope County, about five miles (which is about 8 kilometers) southwest of Golconda. Golconda is the main town in Pope County. Homberg sits on what used to be a flat riverbed.
The Ohio River's Past
Long ago, the Ohio River flowed differently. It used to turn west and go a bit south of where Illinois Route 146 is today. This old river channel then crossed the current Mississippi River south of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Eventually, it joined the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. Scientists believe that big earthquakes about 10,000 years ago might have helped change the paths of these rivers.
A Look Back in Time
Homberg once had a special rail line. This train track was used to carry a mineral called feldspar. Feldspar was mined near a place called Rosiclare. As the mining slowed down, the rail line was no longer needed. It was officially removed in 1982.
For many years, a small food store in Homberg also served as the local post office. This useful spot stayed open until the 1970s.
Nature Around Homberg
Along the north side of the old river bed, there is a tall bluff. A bluff is like a steep cliff. This bluff is 240 feet high. It offers a great view of the area where the river once flowed.
