Han Li or Hon Lik (Chinese: 韓力; pinyin: Hán Lì; Cantonese Yale: Hon Lik) is a Chinese pharmacist. He is famous for inventing the modern electronic cigarette.
Early Life of Hon Lik
Hon Lik was born in Shenyang, China in 1951. When he was 18, he started smoking. He went to Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There, he earned a degree in pharmacy. In 1982, he joined the Liaoning Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Hon Lik's Career and Inventions
From 1990 to 1994, Hon Lik was a leader at the Liaoning Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was in charge of finding and developing new plant-based medicines. Later, in 2003, he became the Director of Western Technologies Corp.
He also helped start a company called Dragonite International Limited. This company worked in healthcare, medicines, and electronic cigarettes. Hon was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and a Director for eight years.
In 2013, a big tobacco company called Imperial Tobacco bought Hon's e-cigarette invention. Hon Lik believes that the e-cigarette is a big step forward, much like digital cameras replaced old film cameras. He hopes that large medicine companies will start making e-cigarettes. He also wants authorities like the FDA to make strict rules. This would help make the product as safe as possible for everyone.
How the E-Cigarette Was Invented
Hon Lik's main goal was to find a way to help people stop smoking regular cigarettes. He worked hard to create a new device. He filed patents for his invention in China, the United States, and Europe. These patents were based on his first application in China in 2003.
The very first electronic cigarette was made in 2004. It was produced in Shenyang, China, and was called "Ruyan." The Ruyan used a system that is still common today. It turned a liquid into a vapor using a heating part. This part was powered by an electric battery.
Hon Lik is now working on a new product. It is called the "e-hookah." He plans for this product to be sold in countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
