What's in a Name? The Origin of Honda
Honda got its name from the Ondaimas, who were the native people living along the Magdalena River and in the area where the town is today.
Honda is often called "the City of Bridges" because it has more than 40 bridges. These bridges cross the Magdalena, Gualí, Guarinó, and Quebrada Seca rivers. It's also known as the "City of Peace" because it managed to avoid most of the violence that happened in Colombia during the 1950s.
A Look Back: The History of Honda
Honda was founded on August 24, 1539, by a person named Francisco Nuñez Pedroso. The town had its best time, or "golden age," between 1850 and 1910. During this period, the Magdalena River was the only way to travel between the Caribbean coast and the city of Bogotá, which is inland.
Honda became the country's main river port. All the goods and items brought into Colombia arrived in Bogotá by passing through the port of Honda. Because of its important history, Honda was named a Pueblo Patrimonio (heritage town) of Colombia in 2010. This means it's a special town recognized for its historical value. As of March 2021, it's the only town in the Middle Magdalena Valley region to have this honor.
