Hopefield is a small country town in the central south part of the Riverina area in Australia. It's located about 12 kilometres southwest of Balldale. It's also 12 kilometres northeast of Corowa. In 2006, about 308 people lived in Hopefield.
History of Hopefield
The Hopefield Post Office opened its doors on 1 October 1882. It served the community for many years before closing in 1954.
In 1915, a building called the Hopefield Hotel was built by a local builder named J Mills. It was located very close to the railway station. Sadly, in 1946, this brick hotel was completely destroyed by a fire. After the fire, the hotel's special license to sell drinks was moved to a new hotel in Forster, NSW, in 1953.
Sports and Recreation
Hopefield has a strong history in local sports, especially football and cricket.
Hopefield Football Club
The Hopefield Football Club started in 1922. They played in the Coreen & District Football Association for just one season.
After a long break, the club started playing again in 1943. They played a few games against the Corowa Royals FC. In 1944, Hopefield FC joined the Coreen & District Patriotic Football Association. They made it to the semi-finals but lost to Rennie.
In 1945, Hopefield FC played in the Coreen & District Junior Football League. The next year, in 1946, they joined the re-formed Coreen & District Football League. They played in this league until 1949.
In 1950, Hopefield FC joined with another club, Buraja, to form the Hopefield Buraja FC. This new team, often called the "Bulldogs," won several championships in the Coreen & District Football League. They won in:
- 1950
- 1960
- 1973
- 1982
- 1995
- 1996
In 1948, Ray Warford, who was the captain and coach of Hopefield FC, won a special award called the Charles Wilson Medal. This award is for the best and fairest player in the Coreen & District Football League.
The Hopefield Buraja "Bulldogs" FC took a break in 2004 and 2005. Then, in 2006, they merged with another club, Coreen Daysdale United FC. This created a new team called the Coreen Daysdale Hopefield Buraja United "Saints" FC (CDHBUFC). This new team won championships in 2006 and 2007.
In 2008, the CDHBUFC joined the Hume Football League. This happened after the Coreen & District Football League stopped operating. Today, the team is known as "The Power." Their team colors are black, white, and teal blue.
Hopefield Cricket Club
The Hopefield Cricket Club was formed in September 1921. Mr. J Norman was chosen as the first President of the club.
