Hopewell is a small community located in eastern Washington County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a big city, but a quiet place where people live. You can find Hopewell near Hopewell Creek, which is a small stream. It's also south of a place called Summit and close to Missouri Route 8.
Hopewell's History
Hopewell has an interesting past! Long ago, this community was first known as "Hopewell Furnace". It was officially planned out and marked on a map in 1858.
Why "Hopewell Furnace"?
The name "Hopewell Furnace" came from a special factory that used to be nearby. This factory was called a blast furnace. A blast furnace is a very large oven that melts metal, like iron, at super high temperatures. It was an important place for making materials in the past.
The Post Office Story
Hopewell also had its own post office for many years. It first opened in 1855, and back then, it was called "Hopewell Furnace" just like the community. Later, in 1886, its name was changed to simply "Hopewell". The post office served the community for a long time before it finally closed in 1978.
